International organizations such as UNESCO rely heavily on the commissioning of external experts and are therefore at risk of ceding their agency to individuals who may have their own agendas. This lecture uses Yona Friedman’s work for UNESCO and the multiple controversies it has generated as a case study of the commissioning practices of international organizations, the relationship between their staff and the experts they commission, and the implications this has for their missions in the field of architecture.
