Since 2022, Professor Dr. Lisbeth Zimmermann has held the professorship in Political Science with a focus on International Institutions and Peace Processes at Goethe University Frankfurt. Prior to this, she was Professor of International Relations at Zeppelin University (2018–2022). Her research focuses on contemporary challenges to the multilateral world order, international organizations, and international norms.
Lisbeth Zimmermann studied Political Science at Freie Universität Berlin. She completed her PhD in the context of the Cluster of Excellence “The Formation of Normative Orders” and the Peace Research Institute Frankfurt. She subsequently worked as a postdoctoral researcher in the Cluster of Excellence “The Formation of Normative Orders” and as a Senior Researcher at the Peace Research Institute Frankfurt.
She has held visiting research positions, among others, at the Elliott School of International Affairs at George Washington University in Washington, D.C., and at the Department of Political and Social Sciences at the European University Institute in Florence.
Currently, Lisbeth Zimmermann directs the MA program in International Studies/Peace and Conflict Research at Goethe University. She also serves as spokesperson for the research profile area “Orders and Transformations”.
She is Principal Investigator in the ERC Starting Grant FARRIO “The Effects of Far-Right Challenges on International Organizations” (2022-2027) and in the BMBF network TraCe “Regional Research Center Transformations of Political Violence.”
With the beginning of the second cohort in 2026, Prof. Dr. Lisbeth Zimmermann is involved as Principal Investigator in the Research Training Group “Organizing Architectures”.

I am particularly interested in international organizations, international norms, and transnational advocacy. How has global governance changed architecture, and how does architecture shape how global governance and international negotiation and decision-making take place?
